became the most influential coach of the 20th century. but these accolades do not define the man that is john robert wooden. his world-renowned journey began in a small midwestern town, martinsville, indiana, under the tutelage of his father, joshua. >> when i graduated from grade school from the eighth grade, dad gave me a card that had on it one side a verse that said four things a man must learn to do if he would make his life more true. to think without confusion clearly, to love his fellow man sincerely, to act from hornest motives purely and to trust in god and heaven securely and on the other side was a seven-point creed and these things dad said, son, try to live up to these. that's all he said and one was be true to yourself, help others, drink deeply from good books, especially the bible, make friendship of fine art, work at it, make each day your masterpiece and build a shelter against a rainy day and give
5:31 pm
thanks for your blessings and pray for guidance every day. >> michael: a three-time all state high school basketball player, wooden atended purdue university with his eyes not on xs and os but on bridges and tunnels. >> i went to purdue university to become a civil engineer. i didn't know that you had to go to civil camp every summer, and there were no athletic scholarships in those days and my parents had no financial means and i would have to work in the summers so i need immediately i was going to be a teacher so after my freshman year i majored in english and knew that's what i was going to do. you think things would have been different. didn't make a difference if things would be different or not. i'm grateful for the way things out, and i hope i would have been happy wherever i was. mr. lincoln, you know, my favorite american said people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be, and there's a lot of truth in that. >> michael: as a high school english teacher wooden became frustrated with the school's
5:32 pm
grading system so he created his own definition of success. >> peace of mind attend only through self-satisfaction and knowing you made the effort to do the best of which you're capable. you can never do your very best. that's perfection, but can you always make the effort. >> michael: building on the foundation of his unique definition wooden began to construct the pyramid of success to help not only himself but others as well. >> to give those under my supervision something for which to aspire and for myself. i wanted my english students to think of something other than just a higher mark, and my athletes to think of something more than just outscoring someone in a contest. i wanted to come up with something you could sigee and i got the idea of something i had seen before, the ladder of achievement but that gave me the idea of a pyramid and i started working on it. first blocks, i chose, however,
5:33 pm
were the corner stones and any structure of the cornerstone is the most important because if you don't have a strong foundation it won't last and the corner stones anchor the foundation, so i chose industriousness and enthusiasm as the cornerstones and through the years i never even thought about changing those two. >> it is one of the most classic moments in sports history. >> michael: although his fame derives from success in basketball, what coach wooden ask most proud of has nothing to do with the hardwood. >> the wonderful long years of happy marriage i had with nelly. and any individual accomplishment and receiving the big ten academic medal given to a graduating athlete, the academics you earn those and i'm probably more proud of those than any individual award i've ever received. >> michael: now age 99 coach
5:34 pm
wood seine at peace with the indellible impact he has left on this planet and all of the lives he has touched. >> someone asked me are you -- do you fear death, coach, and i thought a moment and i said, no, i don't fear death. i'm over 90 years of age. i've had a long life and have many friends and i've been very fortunate in so many ways. pretty lucky fellow, aren't i? all my children, great grandchildren live within 5050 miles or so of me and not too many are blessed that way. out yoernd somewhere i'll be with nelly again, but not until after death so why should i fear it. i believe you appreciate some of the things in the past that you maybe didn't appreciate at the time. i think if you have a certain trying to find the peace within yourself when you get older you'll accept the inevitable much better than if you worry about things all the time, but i can't expect to be lively and mentally and physically as i once was, and -- and i know it
5:35 pm
will gradually get worse but enjoy what you have. as i say, make each day your masterpiece, one of the things that dad give me, and i -- i really feel to me that every day is a good day. >> michael: well, john wooden once said it's not what you do but how you do it, and no one accomplished more and no one did it as well. there you see coach wooden with one of the -- so many hall of famers that have come through ucla, bill walton. coming back with more on the acura halftime report. boss: y'know, geico opened its doors back in 1936
5:36 pm
and now we're insuring over 18 million drivers. gecko: quite impressive, yeah. boss: come a long way, that's for sure. and so have you since you started working here way back when. gecko: ah, i still have nightmares. anncr: geico. 15 minutes could save you 15% or more on car insurance. so here's a great holiday meal deal. right now get two medium one topping pizzas and five breadsticks for just $14.99. that's enough to feed the whole family. carryout and we'll throw in a free two liter pepsi. happy holideal from pizza hut.
5:37 pm
i'm the greatest hitter in the world! i'm the greatest pitcher in the world!
5:38 pm
we're back here in anaheim for the halftime report. ucla with a difficult task in the first half facing a very athletic mississippi state team. they trail by 21, but can the bruins respond here the second half? we're about to find out. stay with us. beer? ear d een bottles t light, which can rn traditionally brewed beer skunky. brown bottles protect better. we use higher six packs protect it from the light. we put so much care into brewing the beer that we want to protect it.
5:39 pm
5:40 pm
5:41 pm
> welcome back to the acura halftime report. mississippi state jumping all over ucla and having a 21-point lead at halftime. ucla came in averaging 65 points
5:42 pm
per game. they have only 19 in the first half on 27% shooting. >> marcus: yeah, defense of mississippi state has done a nice job. jarvis varnado has done a nice job blocking. won't have a chance to compete jarvis. >> steve: four blocks by varnado who leads the nation in blocked shots and the s.e.c. all time. alright, i need someone on the red-eye to our plant in jersey.
5:43 pm
who's it going to be, people? - i'll go, sir. - great. i need somebody in houston by five. i'm your man, sir. six a.m. to omaha. who's taking one for the team? that's be me, sir. steve-o! that's what i'm talking about. steve, can you make it to buffalo by four? anyone seen steve? enjoy your trip. we will. thank you. we know why you fly. we're american airlines.
5:44 pm
5:45 pm
5:46 pm
jarvis. >> steve: back at the woodsen classic. we're seeing a guy who is about as big as a blade of grass, 6'7", 175, ravern johnson, but this young man can shoot the basketball. >> marcus: just slide him underneath the door. he does -- he does one thing extremely well and that's knock down the open jump shots and a little bit of variety of the he's put it on the floor on a couple of plays, takes it down to the basket strong and comes off the dribble jump shot. ravern johnson has really been a surprise in terms of the impact that he has had on this game in the first half 16 points and 16 minutes out of lyon, mississippi. ravern johnson jarvis. >> steve: and he's also part of a defense that leads the s.e.c. in scoring defense, field goal defense and rebouncing, and they really humbled ucla in every area of that in the first half. >> marcus: varnado, four blocked shots.
5:47 pm
he's tied for tenth all time now with lorenzo coleman of tennessee tech jarvis. >> steve: bost on the floor with johnson, varnado and easily inside is mississippi state scoring. that's four now for kodi augustus who gets the start with barry stewart. bruins opening with anderson, dragovic, nelson, roll and lee. >> marcus: got to be the frustrating thing for ben howland who has prided himself on his team's outstanding defense for the past two years at ucla, before that at pitt. to be giving up the's buckets they are giving up. look at that block by varnado on the weak side help to get dragovic jarvis. >> steve: that's four blocks by varnado and there's ravern johnson going deep outside, and they are embarrassing ucla, leading 45-19.
5:48 pm
michael roll for three. in the past roll has been more of a role player, but forced into playing quality minutes this year, between 32 and 35. >> marcus: and quality shots for michael roll are far and few between because the loss of shipp and collison, demanded a lot of defensive attention and that's why his field goal percentage last year up around 50% and this year nowhere near jarvis. >> steve: dragovic, he's 0 for 8. >> marcus: wow jarvis. >> steve: this is the guy they were expecting to be 15 and 20 points per game. all kinds of challenges for dragovic this year. >> marcus: here's one of them. here's one of the big challenges in this game at least, varnado did a nice job going up in the air at the top of the square and going to get that. varnado reminds me of a player that played a number of years ago. shot blocking, inside maniac
5:49 pm
jarvis. >> steve: misses the hook and nelson with the rebound. a freshman who will see quality minutes in the future. there's a lot of minutes available for ucla as lee goes insi inside. barry stewart short. ucla on the way to five-game losing streak. suffered a six-game losing streak in ben howland's first time when he went 10-19. let's go to michael eaves. >> michael: ben howland saying his team needs to do better with the turnovers. only eight official in the first half but what ben howland was talking about were all the quick shots that were basically turn yoefrmts marcus johnson talking about it early, some of the shots by drag jim and turns into a runout for mississippi state and he said beyond that the most important thing we need in the
5:50 pm
second half is need a better effort. they are simply pushing us around. we're too good of a team to be pushed around like we have been in the first half and like you were saying they don't seem to have the effort like they did a couple nights ago against kansas jarvis. >> steve: and against kansas, they took 61 shots in that game and 14 were bad shots. roll. that's a good shot. >> marcus: nice job. nelson finding the cutter, but the effort, the energy on defense that michael eaves talked about and dragovic and sop of the ill-advised long jumpers, taking the long jumpers and in and out and rimming and they are close and you're right there, right there. these shots are not even in the vicinity of the rim. in anaheim, his jumpers were in san francisco jarvis. >> steve: stewart misses and nelson rebounds. anderson a pretty move and a
5:51 pm
finish with the left hand. >> marcus: jerime anderson is the second time he's been able to finish going to the basket in somewhat of a semi-transits situation and need to look for more of those as long as jarvis varnado is nowhere to be found jarvis. >> steve: a 7-0 run by ucla to cut it to 19. varnado wide open, but stripped from behind by jerime anderson. he gets called for the foul. remember, all six officials in this afternoon's contest at the wooden classic are from the s.e.c. >> marcus: you can tell by the way the game is being officiated that there's a lot of contact in that first game with georgetown and washington. anderson doing a nice job weaving and winding his way down the lane, use his left hand on the finish. jarvis. >> steve: when he came to mississippi state, he weighed
5:52 pm
180 bounds. he's put on 35 pounds and still is rather thin. >> marcus: yeah, he is, but you can tell that he's got kind of that wiry strength and coach stansbury talked about that. something you can't develop. you've either got it our don't jarvis. >> steve: nelson with the left hand, no. augustus rebounding. >> marcus: block by varnado, but he affected that shot by nelson with his presence jarvis. >> steve: augustus from riek. anderson at the point. michael roll missing short and nelson with the offensive rebound.
5:53 pm
a foul will be called against the bulldogs, and nelson will be at the free-throw line when we come back. this is my small-business specialist, tara. i know landscaping, but i didn't know how wireless could help my business. i just don't know how wireless can help my business. tara showed me how i could keep track of my employees in the field and get more jobs done faster. i was blown away. i'm blown away. only verizon wireless has small-business specialists in every store to help you do business better. we should get you a hat. now buy any blackberry, like the new tour, at our lowest prices ever, and get one free.
5:54 pm
john wooden, one of the great coaches in basketball history and, okay, in life. his pyramid of success, our subjects right now are poise and confidence.
5:55 pm
>> marcus: poise being yourself and being at ease and not fighting yourself which is important in life and then especially in basketball. confidence and having respect without fear. competitive greatness. being at your best when your best was needed. his teams over the course of the years really, really lived up to that jarvis. >> steve: senior michael roll talked about playing in front of coach wooden. >> want to be a better person both on and off the court. he's a great guy. you know, he preaches all of his wisdom aural of the time, not always basketball, just about life and he's always got, you know, little sayings to help you out and try to get you alon and whenever you see him you try to be on your best behavior and do everything, you know, that he would done jarvis. >> steve: john wooden always said i am just a common man who is true to his beliefs. >> marcus: and he would be more embarrassed than anyone about all the accolades that we are showering down upon him. jarvis.
5:56 pm
>> steve: rights now we would love to see ben howland who he has a great deal of respect for and see his team come together and just stay in this game against mississippi state and, i mean, ucla under 50 points five times since 1996 and as low as 43 against gonzaga, 1999. they only have 27 points in 25 minutes. but they could be very good as soon as next year getting one of the top centers in the nation already signed and josh smith out of seattle and also tyler lamb, a star wing player from modern day, but they need a point guard. they really desperately need a point guard and ben howland has been out on a lot of recruiting assignments, and would i imagine they are taking a look at both ray mccallum and michigan and a high school player and jones out of a junior college in missouri, and i think those guys could get a lot of minutes and start
5:57 pm
perhaps as early as next year jarvis. >> steve: ravern johnson scoring outside. >> marcus: ravern running down the floor after knocking it down. he can't believe the relative ease of the open looks that he's been able to find out here on the floor against this formerly tough ucla defense. malcolm lee, the microcosm of this whole game for ucla. mcdonald's all american three feet wide-open jump shot jarvis. >> steve: tyler honeycutt will go to the scorer's table to check in. anderson gets it ahead to michael roll who lays it up and in.
5:58 pm
jarvis. >> steve: mississippi state leads 22 points, 14:17 left in the ball game. georgetown knocked off washington by eight in game one. ravern, wow. he's something. he's got 24 and two shif his career best. >> marcus: yeah. he is really having a coming out party and we talked about the block party with jarvis varnado and he has his career high 25 and i don't think anybody expects ucla for one guy to shoot lights out like he has jarvis. >> steve: 10 of 11 from the floor by that man, ravern johnson. >> marcus:
5:59 pm
6:00 pm
>> marcus: trying to show a little fight and spirit on the part of ucla. see if that can translate to the defense and maybe string together three or four stops jarvis. >> steve: pick and roll, and they are looking to varnado but morgan covered him up quickly and then there's the three-point shot by benock. we come to you from the honda center in anaheim and game two of the wooden classic. marcus johnson and michael eaves and mississippi state running away from a very young ucla team and varnado stripped away by malcolm lee. >> marcus: this is where malcolm lee is at his most effective. coming down the floor and talked about going north-south as
6:01 pm
opposed to east-west and got a nice off-the-dribble kind of explosion going to the basket that i think ucla can exploit especially once pac-10 season starts jarvis. >> steve: once ucla got beaten by cal state fullerton and by portland and long beach state, coach allen talking about his own defense which is very rare for him. >> marcus: he's played it in the past mainly in northern arizona and used it very sparingly at pittsburgh jarvis. >> steve: here's malcolm lee, a little two on one. good player sharing the basketball jarvis. >> steve: lee at free-throw line from riverside, j.w. north high school and having a tough time finding the bottom. basket whether it's with a free
6:02 pm
shot or on the floor during play and he's an am democratic star at ucla 3.03 gpa. barry stewart doubled. jarvis. >> steve: james keefe back in the game. >> marcus: trying to get a higher quality of shots and that happens for jamieson on that play. good second effort.
6:03 pm
jarvis. >> steve: osby off the glass. a pretty shot and off the shot from osby. >> marcus: the bigs have been active and osby and kodi augustus. they have shown some of maneuverability on the outside and the range from augustus shooting the basketball so they will a team that will be reckoned with in the tough southeastern conference west divisi division. just enough defense jarvis. >> steve: air ball from honeycu honeycutt. phil turner way outside and missing badly and roll comes up with the loose basketball nearing the 10:00 mark in the first half and honeycutt with the finish and a chance for three. tyler is a big part of ucla's future. he certainly, if he can stay
6:04 pm
healthy, can score a lot of points for this team. he has the opportunity as mississippi state running away with it, but honeycutt inside here has the bruins to within 20.
6:05 pm
6:06 pm
>> michael: mississippi state with a commanding lead over ucla 59-39, and they are doing it without perhaps the best player on the roster. that is true freshman renardo sidney. team usa versus the world. sidney not just a prototypical big man. can run the floor and handle the ball. that's what made him one of the best prospects in the nation. the problem is he's not been able to play. we mentioned early that he has an issue with the big 7 footer from rick stansbury. the difference in their two faces is that there has not been a violation identified yet by the ncaa as it relates to renardo sidney so until that violation is issued rick stansbury and his team has no idea how long renardo sidney will be out. we talked to coach stansbury yesterday and he said he's no longer worried about the process and has moved on. they don't know when sidney will play. you wonder guy, this team, a top
6:07 pm
25 teams, and maybe can challenge kentucky or challenge other teams. without renardo sidney, how deep can this mississippi state team jarvis. >> steve: pretty good in their first five but renardo sidney is one of those freak of nature guys when he's in shape. >> marcus: he transferred to fairfax high school and did the investigation of how they would be able to afford the residences in the area but he can play. he'll make a major impact, and my thing is make a decision. if you're the ncaa, rule him ineligible, rule him ineligible but don't string him along for another week, two weeks, a month or whatever it's going to be jarvis. >> steve: many family has submitted more paperwork to the ncaa regarding financial statements in an effort to show how the family pays for rental
6:08 pm
property when they move from mississippi to california. how good would mississippi state be with sidney, might be top ten. >> marcus: pass the basketball as you saw from smith. 270, handles the ball and has three-point range on his jump shot which could fit in well with this team jarvis. >> steve: mississippi state again won the s.e.c. last march in the conference tournament. >> michael: hey, guys, one more question about the renardo sidney case. look at him when he came into the season. a lot of people thought he could be a one and done play, but if this ncaa investigation goes on for a long time, there's a chance he may not play at all this season and he may not ever play for mississippi state. if they don't come up with some type of solution or a vie lake, can you see a chance where he could not ever play for rick
6:09 pm
stansbury, cost him a scholarship and leave and go play in the nba jarvis. >> steve: a penalty for renardo sidney not being able to play this season but also the program of mississippi state jarvis. >> steve: that's why it's so important to get riek back because elgin bailey will be given likely a medical redshirt this year and they are also missing tony beckham and shaunessy smith because of injuries. >> marcus: the ncaa has to make decisions. they can just sit on it, sit on it for the entire season and put off a decision for as long as -- as long as they please which i think is so unfair for the program of mississippi state and for renardo sidney jarvis. >> steve: dragovic. he is now 0 for 9. 0 for 9 is nikola dragovic. rebound tyler honeycutt.
6:10 pm
>> marcus: you know, that possession right there, honeycutt is bringing the basketball and trying to create something on his own and what's going to make him a special ballplayer for ucla once he gets his timing and his conditioning in order jarvis. >> steve: next saturday, east meets west in a powerful s.e.c. pac-10 doubleheader. first the women hit the court as two teams with national title dreams around then the men take center court when number 9 tennessee looks to shut down c usc. the action tips off at 2:30 eastern and 11:30 pacific. at the free-throw line reeves nelson, a bundle of energy. i think he has a terrific future because he brings the attack. he bring
6:11 pm
he brings the high energy and emotion that ben howland likes so much. >> marcus: he's not going to be 20 points, 9, 10, 11 rebounds, can average 7 or 8 rebounds easily but-for-this team to be successful they have to get some offense generated through some of these recruits, smith, josh lamb jarvis. >> steve: well, can you imagine what they might have next year with smith at the post and nelson at a power forward and honeycutt off on a wing with malcolm lee and perhaps a point guard? >> marcus: they could be pretty good as soon as next year, but ben howland will have a rough go this year with the club he has. clear and green bottles let in light, which can rn traditionally brewed beer skunky. brown bottles protect better. we use higher six packs protect it from the light. we put so much care into brewing the beer that we want to protect it.
6:12 pm
grill: holy moly!!! what just hap...whoa! grill: i mean...wow! hey! that looks great. grill: and there's no need to discuss it further. in fact, you can buff most of that out. just give it a once-over with a wet paper towel...hee, hee grill: ok, good talking to you... anncr: accidents are bad. anncr: but geico's good. ding! with 24-hour claims service. so here's a great holiday meal deal. right now get two medium one topping pizzas and five breadsticks for just $14.99. that's enough to feed the whole family. carryout and we'll throw in a free two liter pepsi. happy holideal from pizza hut.
6:13 pm
jarvis. >> steve: were come to you from the honda center. game two of the wooden classic. varnado has had a terrific game. 61-42 lead. toyo tires presents driven to perform. >> marcus: you talked about it in the open. the varnado block party.
6:14 pm
come on in and get your stuff swatted out of here as he's done a terrific job as he normally does. just plugging the hole. coach stansbury talked about that, going to the top of the square and get stuff. he's the guy you better think twice about challenging. the toyo tires driven to perform. jarvis. >> steve: 46 blocks now this year. 440 in his great career. i think he needs one more to tie for the 12th spot. here's varnado for the ninth spot. okafor out of connecticut with 441 i believe. there's michael roll going deep outside. he has 17 points, and ucla has cut it to 16 here at the 7:00 mark. we'll right back as the bruins try to come back on mississippi state.
6:15 pm
6:16 pm
jarvis. >> steve: join us wednesday nightat 11:00 p.m. eastern for our next big 12 telecasts. see one of the biggest rebounders in the pac-10 and senior landry fields as his cards host oklahoma state. the big 12 series presented by
6:17 pm
toyo tires continues wednesday night at 1 eastern, 8:00 pacific. here at the honda center in anaheim, california, mississippi state's lead has been trimmed to 16 by ucla, and the bruins will have on the floor honeycutt with lee, roll, dragovic and nelson. it's been a productive five on the floor outside of dragovic who is 0 for 9. >> marcus: and yet his coach stays with him and that's one thing that you have to like about coach howland. if the it were me, i don't know. 0 for 9. enough, but going to stay with him and in hopes that he can shoot himself back into some confidence at the end of this game that will carry over for the rest of the pre-season heading into the pac-10 season. you need nik dragovic to be himself as a shooter, and we see
6:18 pm
nowhere near the capabilities over this game or the last few games jarvis. >> steve: ben howland has been very patient this year. he's in that teaching mode. he knows he has a young team. stewart missing and nelson trying to battle for it. will he win it? it will be a held ball situation? mississippi state basketball. >> marcus: and varnado, you talked about the fact that he can walk on and flirted with the nba draft and came back to school, but a lot of people kind of wondering what kind of an nba future does he have, if any. you know, it's -- it's not for certain, but i think he might. just -- you need to do one thing and do one thing well and he's number one block shotter in ncaa
6:19 pm
history. there he is. quick jump, everybody on the left side to get the basketball. that's been the kind of activity on the inside, like dennis rodman jarvis. >> steve: rodman not a spectacular player in college and developed and got bert and better and his one thing was defense. >> marcus: i think southeastern oklahoma university, small naia division two school, dennis rodman, and could rebound like none other and was a terrific defensive player. just an energy guy. and that's the kind of bounce year coach stansbury talked about, playing volleyball with himself and shooting it on the right side and tip drill and gets it on the left side jarvis. >> steve: mississippi state picked by many to rin the s.e.c. west because of varnado who is just a few blocks from a triple-double, his 20th career double-double and mississippi
6:20 pm
state will have to fight their rivals and ole miss picked to come in second, alabama, lsu, arkansas and auburn, real powers in the east with kentucky and tennessee and vanderbilt, south carolina and florida. florida lost other day though for the first time. >> marcus: varnado, can i see him in an nba camp just really opening the eyes of some coach because of all this activity. jarvis. >> steve: lee picks it off and malcolm, a nice drive to the hoop, and that was strong by malcolm lee. >> marcus: going to the hole. i don't know if it will ever happen, but i'd like to see him being able to try and use that kind of ability from maybe a force with space to operate and off the dribble going to the basket jarvis. >> steve: the bruins have a lot of players that need to get in that weight room?
6:21 pm
>> marcus: yeah, tyler honeycutt, malcolm lee could use some more strength and right here coming at you, a nice little stutter going left and getting the defense to bite and explosion going to his right and his athleticism really amps up two or three notches, malcolm lee. flat-footed, you don't see it. jarvis. >> steve: this tame ravern johnson simply lost the basketball through his hands and fired it over his team bench so ucla can close down. they have been as close as 16 in the second half after being down by 21 at halftime and 40-19. >> marcus: would have been a bit surprise federal that one went in. it would have been tough.
6:22 pm
everything he threw up in that first half found its way in the basket jarvis. >> steve: honeycutt with the left hand, swatted away by varnado. that was his seventh block of the game. his career high is ten, and he's done that three times against miami, georgia and kentucky. >> marcus: that's impressive. i mean, you know, to be able to glove a left-handed shot from a pretty athletic player in tyler honeycutt. he's so quick off his feet. he's got long arms and talked about the 7'8" wingspan jarvis. >> steve: that will push it back to 18 points and discourage that rally that ucla had put on mississippi state. and -- and the basket by ravern johnson ties his career high with 26 points.
6:23 pm
michael roll missing and lee gets it back and takes the three and knocks it down. they call it a two. foot was on the line so 106 his 13 points have come in the second half for malcolm lee. >> marcus: mississippi state very deliberate in their offense and letting the shot clock get back below ten before they initiate offensively jarvis. >> steve: there's dee bost. seven on the shot clock and mississippi state gets it back. they will run it and a follow from behind on michael roll. jarvis varnado with a block
6:24 pm
party here in anaheim, california. we'll take a look at some of his swats and when we come back we'll also take a look at georgetown's win over washington in game one of the wooden classic.
6:25 pm
jarvis. >> steve: here at the john r. wooden classic. mississippi state with a 69-45 lead over ucla. earlier isaiah thomas scored
